When an individual experiences a blackout, their consciousness remains but their ability to remember anything that happened leaves. The events are never imprinted on the brain for recall. No amount of prompting will get the addict or alcoholic to remember the events.
Blacking Out or Passing Out?
People use these terms interchangeably but they're not the same thing! Although they may look similar in appearence, it's important to know the differences. When a person blacks out, they are still physically and mentally able to perform normal tasks but they may not seem like themselves. When a person passes out, they lose consciousness and cannot move or speak in any way.
Passing out is considered a worse consequence than blacking out. If someone passes out, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Other Facts About Blackouts..
Because age is a determining factor in how much alcohol you can safely consume, you are more likely to experience blackouts if you are younger. Females are also more likely to experience blackouts.
Dangers of Blackouts..
Blackouts can be dangerous because you're more likely to participate in risky behaviors when your brain isn't working correctly. Risky behaviors can include unprotected sex, driving under the influence, or committing crimes. People experiencing blackouts also have psychological consequences such as no control over their impulses, poor judgement, etc.
Of course, all of these negative effects can lead to worse fates. Death, obviously, being the worst of them all.. and not far out of reach, either. When you're an addict, you're basically living on the edge. You'd be surprised how quickly you can fall six feet under.
Tips for Safe Drinking...
