When I first began to write this, I wrote it without really knowing what "it" was. I didn't know what the subject of the poem was. All I knew was that I was describing something hateful and ugly. Something that no one would voluntarily face, without all the facts. At the end, "addiction" seemed to fit pretty well, so that's what I put in there. However, I unfortunately found that I could place the names of a great number of my family members in here and it would work just as well. There exists a monster. Just look at her.
She’s distant, cold; just the opposite of affectionate.
She’s unmotivated, happy with herself, knowing that she’s nothing more than destructive; nothing ambitious. Nothing that’s ever going to amount to anything.
She’s closed, guarded, secretive. She keeps everything hidden, wanting to reveal nothing to you. She leads you on, lies, hides the truth. Misconceptions are her specialty.
She’s callous. She feels nothing; nothing toward herself, nothing toward you, nothing toward anyone; nothing for an idea; nothing for a thought; nothing for God.
She’s sour and inconsiderate. She doesn’t think about you. She doesn’t think about anyone. She’s simply self-centered.
She’s uncooperative and unhelpful. She purposefully leads you down the wrong path. She finds pleasure in seeing you fail. That is, of course, her ultimate goal – to see you fail.
She’s fearful; fearful of all the rights things. She wants none of them to engulf you. It would be her defeat.
She’s rude and impolite. She insults you and throws digs at every open opportunity. She’s attempting to break you down. Don’t let her.
She’s uncommitted and uncaring. The moment you think she’s in it for the long run, there to stay, she bails. She leaves you hanging. You’ve got nothing left but her and suddenly she’s gone.
She’s inevitably persevering; she’ll never give up, except on you.
She relies on no one but herself to do the dirty deeds. She believes that if you want things done right you must do them yourself.
She’s unforgiving, spiteful. Everything she does is in an attempt to collapse your life. She wants to see it coming down hard, tumbling to the ground, shattering like glass.
She’s controlling, to the point where you have none left. She decides what you’ll do and when you’ll do it. She doesn’t even allow you to think straight. She clutters your mind with worthless thoughts.
She’s unfriendly and distant. She leads you to believe that she wants to help you, care for you, be your savior. Just when she gets you hooked is when she makes her move, drops you like a bad habit. But just like a yo-yo she reels you back in and you don’t even try to fight her.
She’s full of hatred, no room for love. She doesn’t even consider love. It’s a foreign word to her; as is family.
She’s ungrateful. Nothing is enough for her. She’s always pushing you harder and harder. You’ll never be good enough to meet her needs.
She’s dishonest and deceiving. She tells you she loves you and that she’ll always be there. She tells you what you’re doing for her is okay. She’s lying.
She’s arrogant. She thinks you can’t help but fall for her. Prove her wrong.
She’s envious and jealous. When you stop to think about yourself, your family, your God, she throws hard blows at you. She can’t stand to see it.
She’s cruel and mean; always picking the worst possible punishments she can think of.
She’s immature; not admitting when she’s wrong, never facing the mistakes she makes all too well. Everything that she does is blamed on someone else, maybe even you.
She’s narrow and intolerant. If things aren’t done her way, she doesn’t want to see them done at all. She leads you to believe you don’t have any other options.
She’s pessimistic and negative; always looking at the dark side of things. That’s what she specializes in.
She’s insensitive, no empathy whatsoever. She wants you to hurt, doesn’t feel when you do, nothing but joy.
There exists a monster. Just look at her. Her name is Addiction.
